Barbara's News

April 2010 - we are both working on our upcoming show in my hometown of Lucan, Ontario. The show takes place on June 5th, reception from 2 to 5pm, at the Grant Gallery on 165 Main Street, Lucan. We will show paintings depicting village and rurallife, at times whimsical, at times reflective.

2010 has arrived with a bang! Many plans for this year, beginning with a one-month stay at St. Simons Island, Georgia. While enjoying the warm weather, we both are working for an upcoming show at Grant Gallery in Lucan, Ontario. This will be our first combined showing of our works.

Fall 2009

Summer went by too quickly. Between commissions and another show in the Kingston's Wilson Room, it's been a whirlwind. I am presently working on three comissions - at the same time I'm in the planning stages for an upcoming solo show at Grant Gallery in my hometown of Lucan, Ontario, Saturday, June 5th, 2010.

This past spring I was elected Publicity Chair for the Society of Canadian Artists.

March 19th, 2009

It's done - all of my paintings have been delivered yesterday to Gallery Raymond. Our studio walls look empty - back to work next week. See you on Saturday!!

March 1st, 2009

All of my paintings are on canvas now - some still need to be fine-tuned. There always seem to be last-minute changes - new ideas popping up. It's good that we have deadlines to work with - otherwise a body of work would never be finalized.

Hope to see you all at the wine and cheese reception on Saturday, March 21st, from 3pm to 5pm at GalleryRaymond, 334 Princess Street, Kingston, Ontario..

February 2009

Six weeks to go until the opening of my solo exhibition at Gallery Raymond, I am progressing nicely, even though, there are days when I fear it will never get done.

Here is one sample of work for the show, titled "Sisters of Providence"..

January 2009

Best of the New Year to you all!

Saturday, March 21st, is the confirmed date for my solo exhibition "A Whimsical Look At Kingston", to be held at Gallery Raymond, 334 Princess Street, Kingston, Ontario. There will be an afternoon wine and cheese reception. Hope to see you all there.

I am painting daily in preparation for that upcoming show. Although I'm starting to feel the pressure of dealing with a deadline, I still make time to search and document subjects that catch my interest. I carry a sketchbook with me, which gets more use than my digital camera. There is something about the immediacy of noting details like mood and colour.

My largest commission has left our studio - it feels good to bring it to conclusion.

May 2010 be an exciting, art-filled year!

Fall 2009

It's been a great summer! With all the summer activities, painting took a bit of a back seat. Attempted to locate Carmichaels' painting rock in Grace Lake, Killarney Wilderness Park - without success - apparently we explored the wrong side of the lake.

The Island scenery is slowly changing - inspiration abounds.

February 2009

I went on a one-day journey to Toronto with like-minded friends to attend local artist Susan Friesen's solo exhibition. As a bonus, we were invited to visit the prestigious Toronto Arts & Letters Club. The highlight of the tour was lunching with Peter Large, president of the Arts & Letters Club, also an Island resident. We were surrounded by art and met an interesting and diverse group of artists. The knowledge that members of the Group of Seven had been sitting around the same table we occupied, was awe- inspiring.

Susan's show was fabulous. We enjoyed superb art, music, food and drink - a day well spent.

May 2009 be filled with joy and creativity

December 2008

I recently attended a couple of workshops. One took place at the Kingston School of Art, led by Valerie Kent, titled "wild weekend of collage". Certainly spurred my interest and gave me ideas. The other course, led by Bonnie Brooks at Wallack's Art Supply, was well worth it. Bonnie led us through exercises of luminous glazes. Here is a small sample of an afternoon's work and inspiration.
